Bob Larkin: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, Bob Larkin was asked to provide the cover painting for Marvel’s comic book adaptation of the then-second Star Wars movie, The Empire Strikes Back (you kids today know it as Episode V)—and thus created one of the most iconic SW covers of all time!

In 1980, Marvel published multiple versions of the adaptation—Marvel Super Special #16 (its first appearance), an oversized treasury edition, a mass-market paperback, and numerous foreign reprints—and this image was the cover art for all of them. (The one exception was the three-issue serialization of the adaptation that ran in Marvel’s monthly Star Wars series—those comics sported covers by Empire Strikes Back artist Al Williamson.)

Great cover. I bet this issue sold like crazy.

Marvel needs to hire Bob back! Where is Stan Lee when you need him most?
